Upcoming Event: The Life of Dr. Glen T Hamilton

Come and hear a fascinating, free talk on the life of Dr. T. Glen Hamilton, his research into psychic phenomena and the possibility of life after death.  His former home, Hamilton House, is a well-known building in Elmwood at 185 Henderson Hwy; the Hamilton family hosted many prominent guests over the years, including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle!

The presentation will be given by East Kildonan resident Linda Horodecki, who’s a retired archivist with the Manitoba government. It will cover both Dr. Hamilton’s paranormal investigations and his civic leadership. Linda has given talks on the subject previously at WPL and the Elmwood EK Active Living Centre.

The event will take place Sunday afternoon, February 2, 2020 from 2 to 4pm at the Big Red Church at 127 Cobourg Avenue.  Admission is free.

We’re not letting the dead of winter get in the way of staying connected as a community! Mark your calendars for Sunday, January 19th, 2020 – that’s the day of the Glenelm Winter Warmer.

The event runs from 5 to 6:30pm.  GeNA is teaming up with the fine folks at the Big Red Church at 127 Cobourg to offer a delicious, low-key 2-in-1 event.

At 5pm, the Big Red Church will host a neighbourhood potluck supper – bring a dish to share! After we eat, GeNA will present a 5-minute AGM, and then there will be free time for visiting and board games – bring your favourite one(s)!

We had a fantastic turnout at last year’s Winter Warmer, and we hope to see many more familiar and new faces this time around. Hope you can join us!

3rd Annual Glenelm Holiday Lights Contest

It’s time to light up our little corner of the world with our friendly, low-stakes holiday lights challenge!

This year the Elmwood Business Coalition has decided to use the theme of ‘stars’ for their Christmas light displays in businesses in and around Elmwood.  We at GeNA thought it would be great if as a neighbourhood we also adopted this theme!  SO … if you can … find a way to incorporate a star into the lights you have (or are hoping to have) set up on or around your home.

The prize is simply bragging rights for being Glenelm’s brightest block. Who will take this year’s title? Will it be Glenwood Crescent again for a 3rd year? Or will Noble, Martin or Carmen (which all tied for runner-up last year) be declared the winners? Or will another street pull out all the stops for a surprise win? That is the question, and we can’t wait to find out!

The 3rd Annual “Light up the Neighbourhood” contest starts NOW!

Online voting will take place beginning December 20 and winners will be announced by New Year’s Eve!

Upcoming Event: Glenelm Pumpkin Parade

Introducing a brand new GeNA event… the first-ever Glenelm Pumpkin Parade!!

On Friday, November 1, bring your jack o’lantern to the Big Red Church (127 Cobourg) between 5 and 8pm.

We will display all the jack o’lanterns so that they can be admired and enjoy hot chocolate and a bonfire. There will also be a fabulous fall-themed photo booth plus a draw for cool prizes. And it’s all free!

Here are a couple of things we’re asking for your help with:

  • Please save your pumpkin seeds! Rinse the guts off them if you can, and email Mellanie at heysunshine23@gmail.com to arrange pickup. The seeds will be dehydrated and donated on behalf of the neighbourhood to the Wildlife Haven Rehabilitation Centre. You can also stick them in your freezer and arrange pickup after the event.
  • GeNA will take care of any jack o’lanterns left at the event: we’ve arranged to donate the spent pumpkins to Aurora Farms to be turned into food for their animals. With that in mind, when you carve up your pumpkins, please don’t dip them in bleach or vinegar.

Hope to see you there!

Save the Date for a Pumpkin Parade on Nov 1

If it seems early to be thinking about Halloween, you’d be right! But the turning leaves have us scheming up fun for all our trick-or-treaters. We hope you’ve all had good time growing your pumpkin kits from our Sweets & Seeds event back in the Spring. We can’t wait to see how you show them off for this year’s Halloween festivities!

On November 1, bring your pumpkin to the Big Red Church (127 Cobourg) for this year’s first-ever Glenelm Pumpkin Parade (learn more about our inspiration here)!

It will be a chance for neighbours to admire all the creative gourds from across the community. And participants will be entered into a draw for some cool “I tree Glenelm” stuff.

As a bonus, GeNA will take care of all the leftover jack o’lanterns by donating them to Aurora Farms where they will become food for their animals.

Stay tuned for more details!
