June 2021 Newsletter Now Available

Hello Glenelm neighbours! Welcome to summer in our beautiful little corner of the world.

A special welcome to all the new people who have moved into Glenelm over the past few months. We know that it’s a challenge getting to know your neighbours during a pandemic and we’re so happy that restrictions are slowly lifting so that we can start meeting all the new folks who’ve chosen to make this neighbourhood their home.

In “normal times”, the Glenelm Neighbourhood Association is very active in hosting many activities and events that keep our community connected. This has been really hard to do over the past year. The ever-changing COVID situation makes it difficult to plan, and it’s always our goal to respect not only public health orders, but also the spirit of the restrictions.

That’s meant we had to cancel many beloved traditions and events. Things like Meandering Music (our roving front-porch music night), Sweets and Seeds (our springtime plant swap and bake sale), the Winter Warmer (a mid-winter potluck in partnership with the Big Red Church) and many other special events. If nothing else we’ve learned that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Rest assured: we will get back to all these things and more when it’s safe to do so. In the meantime, let’s celebrate the small steps towards normal that we are allowed to take now…in the June 2021 newsletter you’ll find details about two upcoming events!

If you are new to Glenelm, we’re looking forward to meeting you! And if you’re someone who has a new neighbour, why not introduce yourself and let them know about the GeNA newsletter?

Best wishes for a safe and healthy summer!

This Weekend! The Great Glenelm Scavenger Hunt is on at last!

Coming up this long weekend (at last – the hunt was postponed because of pandemic restrictions), participate in a one-street scavenger hunt for fun, fresh air and a chance to win a prize!

The scavenger hunt will take place entirely on the two blocks of Cobourg Ave and kicks off a season of family-friendly and Covid-safe hunts that you can do on your own time with your own household.

You’ll have to look high and low to find 20 different house or yard features that can all be seen from the sidewalk.

We will email out the list of clues on the morning of Thursday, July 1st (plus a few printed copies will be available on the community billboard at 127 Cobourg Ave) and you’ll have the whole weekend to get your answers in. More details are available at glenelm.ca/scavengerhunt.

Front Yard Friday is back on July 9th!

Friday, July 9th, 2021 is Front Yard Friday in Glenelm!  At 6pm, eat supper in your front yard and connect with your neighbours at a safe distance.

Here are some ideas on how to participate!

  • bring your BBQ out front and fire it up to make some supper
  • set up a picnic on your lawn
  • get take-out or delivery from one of Elmwood’s wonderful independent restaurants – who still need all the support they can get
  • bring out a musical instrument and start a little jam session or porch concert
  • create a chalk masterpiece on the sidewalk
  • pick up any litter from the boulevard

Remember to always follow all public health guidelines! As rules have begun to loosen, it’s easy to forget the limits that are in place to protect one another. Be mindful that the goal of this event to is provide a safe and easy way to see our neighbours again while continuing to follow pandemic fundamentals, such as maximum gathering sizes, physical distancing, etc. So on Friday, July 9th, let’s have dinner together, apart!

Be creative, stay safe and have fun!
