Get to Know Gordie’s Coffeehouse!

Did you know that every Thursday, Glenelm is home to one of Winnipeg’s most popular musical events, attracting fans from all corners of our city to hear talented acts perform in a wide variety of styles. Here’s the low down on Gordie’s from organizer Lexx Jefferson:

Gordie’s Coffee House is located inside The Big Red Church on Thursdays from 7-11 pm from September to June, with a little break for Christmas.

It is a 1960s style coffee house that showcases live local musicians and includes an open mic segment after the featured artists. Don’t be surprised to see Juno-nominated artists show up in our little Glenelm coffee house!

We are part art gallery, part lending library, part games room and always warm & welcoming. We serve coffee & tea and a variety of sweet and salty treats (cash or Square payment accepted).

Doors open at 7:00pm and first set is at 7:30pm, so call up an old friend or come out and make a new friend.

There is no admission and all ages are welcomed. We pass the hat for the performers and also encourage folks to bring a tin for the bin, ‘cause People Gotta Eat!

Thanks for Banding Together!

Thank you, Glenelm! Our 4th annual neighbourhood-wide cankerworm banding campaign was a success thanks to the participation from hundreds of residents and our formidable “Tree Squad” team of block captains and coordinators.

We managed to band nearly 1,000 trees again. This included complete coverage of boulevard trees on most blocks, and the majority of park trees at Roxy (Elmwood) Park, Hespeler Park and the Talbot Tot Lot.

Big thanks to the Tree Squad for their hundreds of hours of time & energy for this project. Sincere appreciation also goes to the Glenelm School PAC, the Big Red Church, and our city councillor Jason Schreyer for their ongoing commitment to our fall tree banding campaign.  And once again, Schmidt Tree Banding was a pleasure to work with!

Special request!! This year, all of Hart Avenue was covered by block captains who live on other streets. If you’re a resident of Hart and would be interested in serving as a block captain next year, please email trees@glenelm.ca to let us know.

Glenelm Guide to Halloween

It’s always fun to spend Halloween evening in Glenelm, with so many neighbours getting into the spirit of things with decorations, bonfires, and other festivities!

GeNA is delighted to be co-hosting a bonfire at the Big Red Church on Halloween night. Be sure to stop by to warm up your hands and get some treats!

We’re proud to be known as a welcoming neighbourhood that’s a safe and inviting place for all kids and families, including those who come to Glenelm to enjoy an evening of trick-or-treating.

New to the neighbourhood and wondering how to prepare? Generally, the smallest kids start trick-or-treating between 5:30 and 6pm, and most kids have finished up by 8 or shortly thereafter. Many streets report 100-200+ trick-or-treaters, but it varies a lot!

We took an informal poll on the GeNA Facebook group to see how many trick-or-treaters folks usually get. Big thanks to our volunteer Shauna for creating this fantastic & helpful map (below) with all the results! Click on a ghost, you’ll see what people have reported as typical numbers on their street.
