Remembering John King

Glenelm and the broader community of Elmwood lost a champion and a dear friend on March 4, 2022.

John King was a founding member of GeNA, and a dedicated volunteer who was involved in countless organizations and initiatives to make the world a better place.

MLA Jim Maloway paid tribute to John in the Canstar Community News, John King: A Champion for Elmwood, noting:

“On March 4, 2022, Elmwood lost one of its favourite sons. John King left us suddenly, leaving behind not only his loving family and many, many friends, but a community that benefitted enormously from his lifelong activism. … John seemed to be everywhere, and while his straightforward, sincere and thoughtful counsel will be greatly missed, we can be ever grateful to have known him.”

MP Daniel Blaikie also honoured John’s memory in the House of Commons, saying “John’s community activism was rooted in a love for people and a spirit of service. His presence will be sorely missed.”

Although John was always enthusiastic and committed to showing up and helping at events and projects, we will also remember him with great fondness simply as a good neighbour.

He was a Glenelm fixture, often found walking his dog, sharing his kids’ and grandkids’ accomplishments, and describing his retirement adventures in film and TV. John had many fine qualities, chief among them humility, level-headedness, selflessness and a genuine interest in other people’s lives.

The GeNA core organizing committee extends our deepest condolences to John’s family and loved ones. John’s example inspired many to step up and contribute to the community, and his memory will continue to do so.

We miss you, John.

It’s Almost Tree Banding Time! Block Captains Needed!

Wasn’t it great having a spring without cankerworms? The past two springs in have been wonderfully worm-free in Glenelm, thanks in large part to widespread tree banding throughout the neighbourhood.

The banding blitz will begin in August so watch your mailbox for an order form.
