GeNA has been actively advocating for more public trees in Glenelm over the past couple of years. Last fall, we secured funding from the City of Winnipeg for more than 50 additional boulevard trees, with more planting in the works for this year. Part of our commitment to the City to secure that funding was that we would find alternate means by which to reforest our parks.
Every year, Trees Winnipeg’s ReLeaf program donates unclaimed trees to various partners throughout the city. GeNA is grateful that we have been selected as a ReLeaf donation partner this year, and will be receiving a selection of trees donated by Trees Winnipeg!
Our resident arborists from Green Drop have graciously offered to plant and care for these new trees, which will be planted in Elmwood Park (Roxy Park) at 380 Henderson Hwy, at 9am on Saturday, July 18. We’d love for the community to join us as we celebrate new trees in our largest neighbourhood park.
Green Drop have offered to let us watch the planting, and tell us a little bit about the species of trees being planted (they include mountain ash, cork, maple, oak and cherry) and give tips on how to care for newly-planted trees. We’ve also invited Trees Winnipeg to join us to share information about the ReLeaf Program, which is an awesome way to get low-cost trees for your private property and learn the skills to care for them.
There will be lots of room to watch, so please be sure to respect physical distancing with other attendees.
Stay tuned for more news on greening and improvements to our Glenelm parks later this summer (Hespeler Park and Talbot Tot Lot, we’re looking at you!).
